Spanish citizenship by option and other family-based routes: reviewing parentage and documents to assess each case
SERVICES SPAIN > CITIZENSHIP BY OPTION AND OTHER ROUTES
The assessment considers the relationship between the applicant, their parents and other ancestors; places and dates of birth; each personโs nationality; and when it was acquired. Civil Registry entries and documents must support these facts.
The Civil Code provides for routes and circumstances with their own conditions. Some rules depend on age or specific dates. A conclusion reached for one family should not be applied to another, and a route to citizenship should not be confused with a residence permit.
Research may help reconstruct the family line; obtaining a specific record that has already been identified is a separate task. Neither replaces a legal assessment of a possible route to citizenship.
